Diamonds have been treasured above all other stones for centuries. Ancient Greeks thought the stone to be “indestructible” and named it “adarnas”. The nomadic people of the Middle East began to use diamonds in exchange for goods, leading the diamond to become the first recognized hard currency ever used. Monarchs of every nation amassed huge troves of diamonds to signify their power and prosperity.

Today, we still seek out the beauty and mystique of the gleaming gem. Both the value and symbolism of the diamond remains virtually unchanged from ancient times. They are used as a symbol of beauty and love when given as a diamond ring.

Diamond rings have become the symbol of undying love and commitment between lovers as well as signifying prosperity for all who own and wear diamond rings. They come in all shapes, sizes and settings, making them one of the most versatile pieces of jewellery available today.

Diamond rings are sold based on the four rating criteria: Cut, clarity, carat, and colour. Flawless diamonds that are colourless are the most desirable diamonds and by far are the most expensive. Most of these diamonds are considered investment grade diamonds, which make up only 2% of the current market. Most flaws contained in gem grade diamonds can only be seen by a trained jeweller under careful scrutiny. The prices on most diamond jewellery for retail sale today are determined by the size of the stone and the setting in which it is placed.

Diamonds can also come in colours other than white or clear. The famous “Heart of the Ocean” was a deep royal blue. Diamonds can come in an array of colours, from pink to yellow and blue. These diamonds are priced based on the relative rarity of that colour’s presence in the marketplace.

And lastly, the value of a diamond is ultimately placed into the hands of the jewellery maker. A diamond’s worth is directly related to its cut, which is much more than the shape is it finally cut into. A jewellery maker’s skill comes into play when deciding how each diamond should be cut in order to minimize flaws, extract the most brilliance, and have the largest finished stone as a result.

Diamonds will capture our imaginations for years to come, and diamond rings will continue to symbolize strength, love, and prosperity for all time.
