The Figaro chain is one of the most recognized traditionally masculine jewellery designs but can also be scaled to be quite fetching on a woman.
The name Figaro chain was coined by Italian jewellery designers, most likely in the 1800's who were inspired by the operas of Rossini. which were based on the Figaro trilogy plays written by the French playwright Beaumarchais. Figaro, an irrepressible character in the opera "Il Barbiere di Siviglia" or "The Barber of Seville", is one of the most memorable figures in Italian opera. As the Italians have long been known to revere the opera, they were inspired by the opera to create the Figaro chain.
The gold Figaro chain is a classic Italian design consisting of 3 round links alternating with 1 oval link in a repeating pattern. Each link is pressed flat against the next making for a patterned ribbon of gold. This flat pattern makes it versatile for many uses and quite durable.
While the Figaro chain can be found in different metals, gold is the most highly revered metal used in Italian jewellery design. It was thought that gold is representative of the colour of the sun and the colour of bountiful grain harvests. Gold has been revered since ancient times and is still highly valued in jewellery design. The gold Figaro chain is one of the most identifiable looks in Italian fashion jewellery.
Though, the Figaro chain in its traditional form was quite heavy and masculine and is widely recognized as men’s jewellery, modern jewellery designers have scaled down the pattern so that it can be worn by anyone. While keeping true to the essence of the Figaro chain, it is now available in many widths and lengths suitable for men or women. It is a classic design, versatile for use in bracelets, rings, earrings, belts and of course the ever popular necklace. It is elegant when worn alone or with a pendant.
It is a design that stands up to wear as it is durable and not easily broken. It can be worn everyday with nearly any outfit but also adds elegance to special occasions.
